As I live and breathe, can y'all believe the weekend we just had? Between APEX 2015 & Super Bowl XLIX, I think it's safe to say we all learned what high drama can really look like. So, in the championship spirit of the last few days, this month's Character Battle is going to the gridiron!
Now, I can imagine that MANY of you may or may not have lost some (considerable) money over the Big Game, but that's just the way the cookie crumbles sometimes. Might be an unpleasant fact of life, but for every victor showering in glory, someone must wallow in defeat. As members of the FGC, we know that feeling all too well. Truth be told, the community itself came dangerously close to losing out bigtime thanks to the woeful state of the first venue for APEX 2015. However, in the fabled eleventh hour, the clouds opened up and a generous angel appeared before us to save the day. They footed the bill to switch not only the venue, but to move all the reservations to another hotel. Can't make this stuff up, folks.
So now that you're all caught up on recent events, let's get back to the matter at hand. If you were watching SB49, you know that the whole contest came down to the passing games. A few immaculate receptions and some life altering interceptions made history on Sunday. Which got me to thinking... who would make the best QB? And since this is all hypothetical, anyways, let's make this interesting and have this month's contestants be cyborgs! That's right, it's the Challenge of the Cybernetic Quarterbacks!
We're keeping this one contiguous! In one corner, we got the Iron Clad Canadian, Maxima! His opponent this evening, the Killer Commando, Bryan Fury! These warriors have a little extra under the proverbial hood, but that's not going to be an issue here. Again, it's all fun & games. For all we know, cybernetically enhanced sports might just be the way of the furture. If so, I am totally taking credit for getting that particular ball rolling. Anyways, back to the matter at hand. Among these two, who would be the better quarterback?
Hailing from the north, Maxima was formerly a soldier before he took on his cybernetics. After the death of his comrade Rocky at the hands of the NESTS cartel, Maxima took the steps necessary to avenge his fallen brother-in-arms. His infiltration would lead him to cross paths with the man would become his new partner in crime, K'. Although they couldn't be more opposite, they make a pretty decent team. In football terms, these fugitives would make a great QB/RB combo, not unlike Ben Roethlisberger & Le'Veon Bell. If left unchecked, they could put up some serious numbers.
On the flipside of things, we have Bryan Fury. Calling him a solo act would be an understatement. Bryan makes it his business to work alone and he's very quick to sever all ties once his plans are fulfilled. It's fitting that he's a soldier of fortune because he'd be labeled as a mercernary in the NFL for his actions. Chances are he'd follow the money like Jay Cutler. Sure, it would give him a lackluster reputation, but that's just who Bryan Fury is at the end of the day: a mercernary. His loyalty is only to himself, as displayed by his betrayal of Yoshimitsu & Dr. Boskonovitch. I can't see him holding any loyalty to a franchise and that'll definitely turn the fans off.
So of these two, who would make the better QB? Given the current state of the NFL, with its emphasis on analysis & focus on media saturation, they'd both hold our attention. Maxima for his Canadian heritage & dedication and Bryan for his (more than likely) volatile nature on and off the field. However, Maxima has something Bryan doesn't and that is actually what decided this contest for me. Anyone who has used Maxima over the years knows of his signature attack, the Vapor Cannon. (Hell, it was my favorite thing about KOF '99, aside from the soundtrack.) That's the problem, though. While Bryan would most likely catch a few penalties & fouls for unsportsmanlike conduct, he wouldn't blast a football-sized hole through any of his receivers. With the possible exception of K', no one could catch a pass from Maxima if he's ever forced to throw in a panic situation. That's a pigskin-related fatality & a world of controversy just waiting to happen. Roger Goodell isn't going to want to go anywhere near that! Although he'd cost the league a little credibility, Bryan would be less of a headache in the long run.
WINNER: BRYAN FURY
Until next time... keep fighting the good fight, my friends.
