Aphro’s Asskicking Anthems – March 2016

What it is, what it is, what it is... shed no tears. The Dynamek One has returned because the music has yet again moved me to action! This month's Anthem comes to us from the Land of the Rising Sun and I'm here to tell you, folks... it is a doozy!

I'll admit that this might not be your usual fare, but you know how things work here... every song featured in this column is one I listen to personally. This track is no exception. In fact, I can take it a step further and label this one a favorite among my current playlist of 4,233 songs. What you're hearing is "Arashi Ga Oka/Wuthering Heights" by Tomoyasu Hotei. If that name sounds familiar, it's because he is the man responsible for everyone's favorite song off the Kill Bill soundtrack. This one, however, is from his 2013 studio album, Come Rain Come Shine. The single was used in collaboration with Koei Tecmo's release of Dynasty Warriors 8 as both the music for the game's third trailer as well as the theme used during the credits roll. The collabo was so hand-in-hand, there was even a promotional weapon & costume for Lu Bu that featured Hotei's trademark guitar pattern.

My adoration for this song stems not just from how much I enjoy badass music, but primarily from my love of the Dynasty Warriors franchise. Over the years, they've had no shortage of amazing tracks to keep me hacking & slashing away to my heart's content, but this one stands out among the hours and hours of music. Even Hotei himself holds this song in higher regard. There's simply an aura about it that compels you. The fact that it's used at the end of the game only cements its impact on me. Oh, and because I'm such a nice guy, here are the lyrics for the song... just in case any of you were curious.

So who does this song fit among all the fighters in gaming? Well, a few names came to mind. One jumped out at me, though. This guy is a solid character in-game, but he's also a character in terms of personality. There's something weird about him that is pretty unavoidable. Not a negative, mind you... just a little weird.

I know how strange this looks, but it'll make sense in a minute. Well, some of it will...

Hikaru Otagi, the main protagonist of Chaos Code. As the main character, he's your typical well-balanced, middle of the road, easy to pick up & learn type of fighter. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. Guys like that help people find their niche in every game. What makes Hikaru unique, though, is the image you see above. That's right, there is another version of him in the game: MG Hikaru. Now, I would love to say that the "MG" stands for something awesome, like "Majin Genkai" or something along those lines, but it doesn't. Take another look at MG Hikaru in the above picture. More to the point, look at what he's holding. That, my friends, is a limited edition Magical Girl Chaos-Ko action figure. You see, our boy Hikaru is a big time otaku. Apparently, just the sight of that little action figure is enough to ignite a burning passion in him, a la Domon Kasshu. Knowing that, I can't help but imagine that "Arashi Ga Oka" or a song not much unlike it would probably be playing in his ears while he was on line waiting for his opportunity to buy his (months in advance reserved) favorite figurine. Again, not mad at him, just can't help but wear a smile thinking about it.

Until next time... keep fighting the good fight, my friends.
