With all the money that's (obviously) about to get thrown around in the FGC, this month's Character Battle dares to ask a somewhat provocative question. After the jump, let's get into it...
Once again, it falls on yours truly to add a quick disclaimer to the proceedings. When the subject of our monthly Character Battle comes up, I have to make it abundantly clear that it has nothing whatsoever to do with combat. There are just so many other places that you could find such entertainment & I, for one, would rather leave that type of work to the professionals. No, ladies & gentlemen, here at KPB, we like to do things... a bit differently. I enjoy asking the unexpected questions when it comes to pitting to warriors against each other. Doing so makes my job exceedingly joyous and if you can't enjoy what you do on some level, then what's the point of doing it at all?
As I mentioned earlier, it is no secret that a veritable tidal wave of money is about to wash over the FGC. Seriously, I shudder at the thought of how many talent scouts there are going to be in the audience/crowd this year at EVO. Everybody suddenly wants in on what they feel is going to be the proverbial 'ground floor' on a budding market. While I could never fault anyone for thinking that way in our modern society, I can't say I'm looking forward to the inevitable 'bubble burst' that, for all intents & purposes, is more than likely right around the corner. Don't believe me? Let's talk after the numbers for EVO 2017 are tallied up. However, that's neither here nor there, we have business to attend to... Character Battle business. On the subject of money, particularly tidal waves of it, I suddenly find myself wanting to determine who would be the Best Sugar Momma Sponsor in all of fighting games!
Before anybody freaks out, I'm fully aware of what all is suggested by the title "sugar momma", but don't worry any of your pretty little heads... there's nothing scandalous or taboo going on here. I just thought it would be funny to have an affluent female as the proverbial Rick Fox of a competitive gaming team. So, with that in mind, our choices are Tekken's lovely Emilie (Lili) de Rochefort & the incomparable Karin Kanzuki from Street Fighter V. Outside of the obvious visual queues & ridiculous bank accounts, these two actually have a lot more in common than one might initially assume. Both have scrappy rivals, very high-impact yet elegant fighting styles and a flair for (seemingly impractical in combat) haute couture. However, spoiler alert, there is a key difference between them that ultimately confirmed my decision this month.
Lili is, no matter how you look at it, a rich girl who simply enjoys fighting. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. She fights because, in contrast to her sheltered & aristocratic lifestyle, doing so makes her feel alive. Despite coming off as a snob, there actually is a kindhearted women beneath all frills & petticoats. However, her brawl loving ways puts her at direct odds with her father. Being "daddy's little girl" and all, he doesn't approve of her chosen hobby. That doesn't stop really her, of course, but she at least acknowledges his disdain. Her defeat at the hands of Asuka Kazama fuels her passion to become even stronger & more graceful and that's what having a rival is really all about at the end of the day. Unfortunately, Lili has a bit of a petty streak in her and Asuka, more often than not, is usually on the receiving end of it.
Current head of the Kanzuki Zaibatsu, Karin has actually grown considerably between her canonical appearances within the Street Fighter timeline. When we're first introduced to her, she's the epitome of spoiled brat privilege, what with her insistence on having a custom tailored school uniform & helicopter escorts damn near everywhere. She is the rival of Sakura Kasugano and, as such, actually looks up to Ken Masters because of his rivalry with Ryu. As the years rolled on, she came to wrest control of the family business from her father. The new responsibility led to her maturing somewhat into a polite & civil lady.
So how does all this come back to the original proposed question of this contest. Well, I wasn't joking when I said that a key difference between these two graceful warriors is what ultimately decided this month's Character Battle. At the end of the day, Lili is still too young & impetuous to grant that type of responsibility. Majority of her time seems to be spent finding ways to screw with Asuka. Karin, on the other hand, has grown up enough to know how to handle micromanaging different groups. Furthermore, and this might come off as a little bit petty, but something tells me that Lili's money simply isn't as long as what Karin has got at her disposal. If I'm looking for a financial backer, the choice is simple.
WINNER: KARIN KANZUKI
Until next time... keep fighting the good fight, my friends.
