Aphro’s Asskicking Anthems – August 2016

What it is, what it is, what it is... shed no tears. I know it's only been a few weeks, but it is always good to be back with more of those crazy sounds for all of your beatdowns! This month's Anthem is all about danger! After the jump, let's get weird...

By now, you should already know this song. For anyone not in the know, this track is "Heathens" by twenty one pilots. It's one of the lead singles from the (stellar) Suicide Squad soundtrack. Regardless of how you feel about the movie, there's no denying that the soundtrack is a home run. I, for one, happen to thoroughly enjoy the movie. I wanted to enjoy some big, dumb action & I got exactly what I paid for when I bought my ticket. For some, however, the soundtrack itself was the best part of the movie. I see nothing wrong with that assessment. This track just so happened to be one of those songs I heard before leaving for work one morning and that hook stayed with me all damn day. By the time I got back home, I was compelled to find the video for it. The rest is history.

Knowing all this, finding an appropriate character for the song wasn't just easy... it was kismet. Seriously, it's as if the Muses & Sisters of Fate collaborated to make this month's selection so appropriate, so dead-on accurate, I actually hesitated before writing this article. To take it a step further, I even put it to a vote with the other KPB Scribes just to make things all the more democratic. It was either going to be this song (and my character choice for August) -OR- "Boss" by Hiimrawn for the boss of all bosses. Wouldn't you know it? Unanimous approval of "Heathens". When you see who I'm picking, it'll make all the sense in the world.

Don't worry, he's not looking at you... he's just looking directly into your soul.

Don't worry, he's not looking at you... he's just staring directly into your soul.

See what I mean? This is exactly what I was talking about when I told you this all felt preordained. That walking nightmare is none other than Xanadu, leader of Team Villains for KOF XIV. If you never believed in the Boogeyman growing up, SNK has formally decided to punish your disturbing lack of faith. When everyone's favorite career criminals pretty much find themselves in Bane's prison from "The Dark Knight", they are... well, let's just say greeted by the BMOC. Xanadu is such a badass, that (apparently) everybody that's anybody knows him as "the most evil of villains". All shapes & sizes, I guess...

As fate would have it, Xanadu is considered to be a superior intellectual. While, yes, he does seem to have a higher understanding of the intangible, it unfortunately translates into him being something a raving derelict with the physical mannerisms of an ill-tempered child. Just one look into the gaping abyss that is represented in his eyes tells you that there are clearly a couple of supporting characters rolling around in that noggin of his. Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if one of those voices was singing the hook to "Heathens". I shudder at the thought of how many new inmates found themselves at the jail and the first person they meet (read: sneaks up behind them) is Xanadu. Yeah... I don't care how crazy whatever it is you did to land in prison was, nobody's acting like a tough guy once you hear that insidious laugh reach out & grab you from the darkness. Good luck sleeping that first week, fish.

Until next time... keep fighting the good fight, my friends.
